No Vain Loss by M.C. Frank

Publication Date: 5th December 2017

Blurb from Goodreads: She A soldier is summoned to the North Pole, days before the year changes, told to fix the great Clock for a celebration. He has no idea what to do.
A girl, hunted for the crime of being born, almost dies out on the ice. She is rescued by the last polar bear left alive.
A library waits for them both, a library built over a span of a hundred years, forgotten in the basement of an ice shack.
The world hasn’t known hunger or sickness in hundreds of years. It has also forgotten love and beauty.
This is the One World.
The year is 2524.

Inspired by the short stories of Ray Bradbury, this futuristic young adult novel in three parts is set in a world where Christmas -among other things- is obsolete and a Clock is what keeps the fragile balance of peace.

Written in three parts, this is the breathtaking story of how two unlikely people change the world, and each other, one book at a time.

In No Vain Loss, the world is on the brink of the greatest war humanity has ever known. Lives will be lost. New truths will be revealed.

Review:~

Cover Page: Another great one. I just the cover pages of the whole series. Aren’t cover pages are the first step to buy a book?

Plot: Again, plot was filled with so many twists and turns it was hard to catch up with my small mind. They would come at so many unexpected places leaving you all in wonder. It was a total package of thrill, adventure, sci-fi, fantasy, drama, romance and passion. The pace was fast but steady. Perfectly blended.

Writing:

  • A few snowflakes wander inside his mouth as well, and he relishes their taste, swallowing their coldness.
  • It will lead him to death, and his brain knows that, but what he’s only just finding out is that your heart beats, when it beats strongly—if not entirely regularly—and more importantly when it beats next to the heart of the one person in the Planets who makes you come alive…Then you just follow. Come what may.
  • There are worse ways to die than beneath a velvet sky, snowflakes on your lips.
  • This is never giving up, never getting too tired, no matter how many times they’ve killed you; always getting back up on bleeding feet and getting on with the battle.
  • “Never say you belong to me, or I to you, match girl. We’re done with belonging to another on this Planet. But yes, we belong together. That’s a truth that will never change, no matter what happens.”

10/10

Overall: I’m glad it didn’t turn out bad as most series would.  The book was the final installation in the No Ordinary Star series and now we would never meet our tin soldier and the match girl ever again. It’s kind of sad but well, I happy too that turned out this good.

The characters were real; they felt real. My favorite character, if asked to choose would be, Astra Steadfast, our match girl and also a read headed fury. I loved her so much all along the series. She felt like a really genuine one and the one who knows how to get someone in their place. She was strong-headed all the way long.

As for our Tin soldier, Felix, he was a tough guy with lots and lots of dent. He thought of himself as someone not of any worth but well, who knew he meant for great purposes.

Every character was unique in their own way and enjoyed reading each one of them.

The whole story, starting from the first book is unpredictable. You can’t think what might happen next. Well, I wasn’t.

I would really recommend it to every sci-fi + fantasy + romance lover. I loved it. Read it and see if you will or not. 🙂
